Pane dei Morti biscotti
I made these delicious Pane dei Morti biscotti - “Bread of the Dead” biscuits for Halloween
They are traditionally served in Italy on “All Souls Day” which is on November 2nd and are from the Lombardi region.
As morbid as their name sounds these biscuits have a crisp exterior, are chewy in the middle with intense flavours of dried fruit & nuts, crushed amaretti, cinnamon, chocolate & nutmeg.
Enjoy as a spooky treat 👻
Mangia, mangia! 👩🏻🍳
Pane dei Morti biscotti recipe
100g amaretti biscuits - crushed finely
250g of plain flour
75g of blanched almonds
50g of dark chocolate melted
1 tsp of baking powder
75g of dried figs
75g of raisins - soak in hot water for 10 minutes
2 egg whites
1 tsp of cinnamon
1/2 tsp of nutmeg
Pinch of salt
120 ml of white wine or vermouth (I used vermouth)
Makes 12-14 biscuits
1. Preheat the oven to 160C fan or 180C normal oven.
2. Grind the almonds into small pieces.
3. Mix everything together in a bowl apart from the raisins & figs. Note- you can mix everything together in a mixer or by hand in a bowl.
4. Chop the figs into small pieces. Drain & dry the raisins then add them together with the figs to the rest of the mixture & combine.
5. Knead the mixture until smooth for about 5 minutes on a lightly floured surface.
6. Cover a large baking tray with parchment paper.
7. Now it’s time to shape the biscuits (see my photos as a guide) each need to be about 9-10cm long & 4cm across.
8. Place on the tray spaced out & bake for about 25 minutes. Don’t over cook them.
9. Let them cool then cover in icing sugar.
